Why your council needs an IT policy

The 2025 SAPPP Practitioners' Guide introduced Assertion 10, which requires parish councils to have a formal IT policy. This is now an auditable requirement — your internal auditor will check whether the policy exists, has been adopted by council resolution, and covers the key areas.

An IT policy protects the council in three ways: it ensures council data is handled securely, it provides a clear framework when the clerk role changes (so no data is lost), and it demonstrates to your auditor that the council takes digital compliance seriously.

For full details on what Assertion 10 requires, read the Assertion 10 compliance guide. To check your council's compliance across all AGAR assertions, try the free compliance checklist.
